The box is elaborately lacquered with gold dots and tells the story of life in a Japanese village with fields of crops, waterfalls, trees and hills with clouds covering the moon. The inside is also elaborately decorated to continue the story. The box is fitted with a slate inkstone and a rectangular silver water dropper with matching tray.
